Learning to Thrive in the Gen AI era
Are you learning but not making tangible progress?
In an age where Generative AI (Gen AI) is redefining workflows, the ability to adapt, learn - and relearn - has become a superpower. In this article, you can read about my early experiences of Gen AI learning.
Earlier this year, someone I know who speaks authentically asked me, 'When will you stop learning?'. Though said with a touch of frustration, it struck a chord. Learning, for me, isn't just a personal passion but a professional imperative.
My approach to learning about Gen AI was initially broad, with no fixed goal other than to ensure I kept up in an accelerating AI knowledge race.
Over time, I refined my strategy to focus on
Developing skills that would enhance my future career or support my personal goals
Experimentation to find ways to save time professionally and in my personal life
How I Started
Invested in foundational knowledge: I invested in a broad course that covered Gen AI use and undertook specific training delivered by professional marketers who had already carried out 1000s of experiments.
Stayed updated and tested as applications improved: The accelerating AI technology race is separate from the AI knowledge development race. Once I realised this, I started watching the innovative companies that show great potential and are transparent but have some way to go.
Some Gen AI tools for creative tasks still need refinement but are improving quickly, and many trusted platforms are integrating Gen AI capabilities to transform careers and industries. I see no end to the AI technology or knowledge worker races. How we do our jobs has changed, and Gen AI will impact more jobs and careers.
However, my years of experience are incredibly beneficial when navigating this new landscape. Those with expertise in a particular field have an advantage in adopting Gen AI responsibly and effectively - IF they remain open to learning, innovation and experimentation.
Why I Will Never Stop Learning
Learning AI concepts and mastering new tools to enhance a professional career requires a strategic approach, especially given the complexity and breadth of the field.
Two proven techniques - active recall and spaced repetition - can help effectively retain knowledge and build practical skills. Standard Gen AI tools can guide you on how to apply both in seconds.
As a marketer, continuous learning is fundamental to staying ahead. This profession demands adaptability, and embracing lifelong learning is the only way to thrive.
One concept that stuck with me last year was the idea of a "procrastilearner" - someone who learns endlessly without acting. Many knowledge professionals may occasionally fall into this trap.
Gen AI brings many opportunities and risks for business and marketing, but the experimentation continues since our new Gen AI tools are here to stay.
So, if you haven't started yet, now is the time to go and act.
